What does “removed” include?

Quick answer

A stump cut close to the ground, a stump ground to an agreed depth and a larger excavation are different results. Explain how you intend to use the area afterwards: lawn, planting, a fence, paving or another project. That affects the specification and whether another trade needs to advise. Grinding does not automatically remove every root or prepare a structural foundation. Ask the business to describe the area, depth and finish included rather than assume tree removal leaves the ground ready for any use.

Size, location and machine access

Provide the stump’s approximate dimensions if they can be observed safely, and describe gates, narrow passages, steps and nearby structures. The machine must be suitable for the available route and working area. Tell the business about slopes and access over neighbouring land. Do not widen a gateway or dismantle a boundary before agreeing what is actually needed. A contractor may need to inspect before quoting reliably. The postcode helps plan a visit, but does not show whether equipment can reach a rear garden.

Underground services and nearby features

Tell the professional about any known buried cables, pipes, drains, irrigation and nearby foundations. Do not dig to investigate unknown services yourself. Ask how the site will be checked and what limits apply where records are incomplete. Stumps beside walls or other retained trees can need particular assessment. The intended excavation depth and working area matter as much as the visible stump. A safe proposal should address those constraints before machinery is used, rather than treat every stump as an isolated obstacle in open soil.

Grinding, excavation and retained roots

Ask what the proposed method leaves behind and why it suits the later use of the site. A grinding job may have a defined footprint and depth, with surrounding roots remaining. Broader excavation can involve more disturbance and disposal. Removing additional material is not automatically better if it affects retained structures or vegetation. If a builder, fencer or landscaper requires a particular clearance, coordinate that specification before the stump job begins. Otherwise a second visit may be needed to achieve a different result.

If follow-on works have a deadline, ask the next contractor to state their ground requirement before agreeing the stump job. A request for a fence post position, for example, may differ from preparing a planting area. Identify who checks the result and who handles remaining roots or settling ground. The stump business should not have to infer an unmentioned construction specification, and a tidy surface should not be presented as evidence that a later foundation can be installed safely.

Ground disturbance and retained roots

Clarify whether the work follows an authorised removal, concerns an old stump or is part of a larger landscape or building scheme. Agree who owns the stump and surrounding land. Tell the business about nearby trees, boundary structures, drainage, services and the intended use of the finished ground.

At a Braintree site with protected retained trees, ask how machinery, excavation and reinstatement will avoid unnecessary root disturbance, and check relevant permissions or project conditions. A stump grinder’s access requirement is not permission to remove a boundary or cross neighbouring land. Agree achievable depth, retained roots, chippings and making good; the condition below ground needs assessment.

Chippings, soil and reinstatement costs

Ask whether the quote includes…

Clarify whether grindings stay on site, are removed or are mixed into a specified reinstatement. Backfilling, topsoil, turf and planting are not automatically included. Ask for the stump count, method, access, depth, spoil handling and VAT in writing. A price for grinding one visible stump differs from excavation and full landscaping. If later paving or a new fence is planned, agree who confirms that the remaining ground meets that project’s needs.

  • The agreed footprint, depth and expected retained roots.
  • Removal or retention of chippings and other material.
  • Backfilling, finish and any follow-on landscaping.

Checking the finished site

Keep people and animals away during work and follow advice about using the area afterwards. At handover, compare the finish with the specification and ask what remains below ground. An apparently tidy surface does not establish that every root or buried obstruction has gone. Retain the invoice and any site notes for subsequent works. For an enquiry, send the postcode, stump location, access route and intended future use; these are more useful than asking only for the cheapest removal price.
